Lenz' Law and Generators
This lecture is based on HRW, Sections 31.4 to 31.6.
- When the relative motion of a conducting loop and a magnetic
field generates a changing magnetic flux through the loop,
it creates a motional EMF in the loop.
- One can use the Earth's magnetic field as a source of energy,
if one can move a loop through it (example: loop of wire on
a satellite orbiting the Earth).
- Lenz' Law describes the direction in which current flows
when driven by a changing magnetic flux through a loop:
it flows in the direction which will create an induced magnetic
flux which opposes the change in the original flux.
