Syllabus for Physics 312, Sections 03 and 04
The course breaks up naturally into discrete units,
listed below. I've given estimates for the time we'll
spend on each unit, but those may change as the
course evolves. As you can see, we are skipping
some chapters in the text. We may also skip sections
within chapters.
Note that we may not reach the final topics by the end
of the course.
- Rotation of Rigid Bodies: 1 week. Chapter 10
- Rolling Motion and Angular Momentum: 1 week. Chapter 11
First exam: Thursday, March 26
- Oscillations and Simple Harmonic Motion: 1 week. Chapter 13
- Waves: 1 week. Chapter 16
- Sound Waves, Superposition and the Doppler Effect: 1 week.
Chapters 17 and 18
- Light Waves: 1 week. Chapter 35
- Interference and Diffraction of Light Waves: 1 week.
Chapters 37 and 38
Second exam: on or about Thursday, April 23
- Temperature and Heat Transfer: 1 week. Chapters 19 and 20.
- First Law of Thermodynamics: 1 week. Chapter 20
- Kinetic Theory of Gases: 1 week. Chapter 21
- Heat Engines: 1 week. Chapter 22
