Physics 312 Lecture: "Torque" Mar 13, 1998

• Torque is the angular analog of force
• The torque exerted by a force depends on its point of application, and on its angle with respect to the radius vector
• Newton's Second Law (F = ma) has an analog in the angular realm:

          torque = (moment of inertia) * (angular acceleration)
         

• The right-hand rule, or the clockwise convention, can be used to determine the direction/sign of torque
• Power = (torque) * (angular velocity)
• The work done in changing the angular velocity of a rotating object is exactly equal to the change in rotational kinetic energy
