Grading
Course grades are based on several factors:
participation in class, homework assignments,
and performance on a midterm and a final exam.
Textbooks
There are two textbooks you should purchase for this course:
- Magnificent Cosmos, a collection of recent articles
from Scientific American.
- Measuring the Universe: The Cosmological Distance Ladder,
by Stephen Webb.
In addition, I will assign some readings from
a set of articles from the popular literature.
These are available in electronic form
(see
the class home page),
and also physically available in the RIT library.
Lab course
There is no lab course associated with this course.
Other resources
There is a Physics Study Center in Building 8, Room 1174.
A schedule posted outside the room lists times at which
someone will be available to
help with questions.
You may also contact the Learning Development Center,
in the Eastman Building, second floor. The Office of
Special Services can arrange one-on-one tutorial sessions
for qualified students.
If you have any special needs, you must inform me during the
first week of classes. Otherwise, I may not be able to
make arrangements in time to help you. Please contact me
after class or at my office.
