Physics 212 Lecture: "Thermodynamics I."
Jan 19, 1998
- Thermodynamics is the study of heat and work done by
systems
- You must keep track of
- Heat gained (or lost) by a system: Q
- Work done by (or on) a system: W
- The change in internal energy of a system: U
- "Thermal equilibrium" means "no heat flows"
- The Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics:
If two systems are each in thermal equilibrium with a third,
then they are in thermal equilibrium with each other
- The First Law of Thermodynamics:
The change in internal energy of a system is the sum of the
heat added to the system minus the work done by the system.
This lecture discusses material in Chapter 15 of Cutnell and Johnson.
