Physics 212 Lecture: "Wave Inteference."
Feb 9, 1998
- The Principle of Linear Superposition states the when several
waves interfere, the resulting wave is the sum of
each input wave.
- Constructive interference occurs when waves with the same
wavelength are in phase.
- Destructive interference occurs when waves with the same
wavelength are out of phase.
- Either constructive or destructive interference can occur,
depending on the position of a listener
related to the sources.
- Beats are slow variations in overall amplitude which occur
when two waves of slightly different frequencies interfere.
This lecture discusses material in Chapter 17 of Cutnell and Johnson.
