Physics 212 Lecture: "Electromagnetic Waves II."
Feb 18, 1998
- Because light takes time to travel large distances,
when we look at a very distant object, we see it as
it was some time ago.
- Although most waves require a medium through which to
propagate (sound waves require air), electromagnetic
waves do NOT.
- Therefore, E-M waves have a Doppler formula which is slightly
different than other waves; it involves only the relative
velocity of the source and observer.
This lecture discusses material in Chapter 24 of Cutnell and Johnson.
