Question 1:
An ocean liner leaves New York City. It travels L = 155 km at an angle of 18 degrees south of east.
How far east does it move?
Answer: distance east = (155 km) * cos(18) = 147 km
How far north does it move?
Answer: Because the liner is moving south, its displacement northwards must be negative: distance north = -(155 km) * sin(18) = -48 km
